Back in the mid 1980s, Arthur was laid up in bed with a bad back. His wife at the time came to him with a gift certificate saying, “I think you should learn to throw pots.” Arthur replied, “If I want to throw pots, I can go into the kitchen and throw pots.”
Needless to say, Arthur began classes in pottery. He attempted to throw pots on a wheel but could not master the technique. After a few weeks, his teacher suggested that he try hand-building. All work at this time was done with porcelain clay. Then the teacher said that they were going to do a raku firing one weekend. They made pieces of pottery out of raku clay. They did a firing, and that is when Arthur fell in love with doing pottery. Since, that time, Arthur has been a raku potter. Everything is hand built with slabs or coils of clay. Arthur has won first & second place in art shows and two Best of Show awards. He has pottery in China, Germany, France and in many states in this country. He continues doing his pottery to this day.
