I have had no formal training – my talents are God-given. I’ve been drawing from a very early age, mimicking comic book images. As a kid, I created my own comic strips. I thought it would be cool to be a cartoonist and have a strip in the daily newspaper, like Hank Ketchum and Mort Walker. In third grade, I won a contest for best Christmas picture, which was published in the local paper. The following year, in fourth grade, my teacher, Miss Graves, had me outline the profiles of our entire class for silhouette portraits, as my hand was quicker and steadier than hers. One summer, I spent a number of hours having neighborhood friends sit for me in the cool of our basement so I could draw their different facial expressions. Once in public junior highs school, my first art room teacher, Mr. Nagahashi, showed us many other varieties of producing art, such as silk screening. All through high school, I received “A” grades before the semester has barely begun. During these teenage years, I did a new comic strip character I named “Tough Ed”, based on my best friend’s dad. After graduation, I became an infantryman and had other things on my mind, yet I continued to do cartoons & comics. Once discharged, my abilities took a turn – I began to create more find art projects. I do well in all mediums, and discovered the “secret” of transferring what you see to a flat piece of paper or canvas. The realization of this was “all in the eye.”
I studied Theology for five years and had done multiple portraits of some staff children, students, and campus families. I produced some book covers for a publishing organization back east in Pennsylvania, and in 1990 I began to use watercolors and found them simple as well as inexpensive. I moved to Arizona in 2006 where I’ve commenced painting watercolors of horses. Presently on this gallery site, I can offer images to you on subjects in a variety of mediums. Thank you for your time and I do hope you enjoy my artwork!
